Snow in Denbighshire – Update at 10.15am Monday - 11/12/2017

Gritting teams have continued to work through the night. Temperatures fell to minus six overnight in the county, so driving conditions will be treacherous this morning.

Teams will continue to operate today, with the focus on keeping the roads as clear as possible. Teams will be supported  with snow clearance work  by agricultural contractors.

A mini gritter is being sent out to treat car parks in the south initially and this will then be moved up to Denbigh and other towns in the north.

Main ‘A’  roads in the south of the county seem ok, but other routes are still causing problems

Crews have been sent out to salt the town centres in St. Asaph,  Denbigh, Ruthin, Llangollen and Corwen. We will also assess Rhyl and Prestatyn but if these aren’t too bad then the crews will be deployed elsewhere as appropriate.

The gritting situation will be reviewed at lunchtime and plans will be put in place for overnight.

Public Transport:

  • The  number 73  Ruthin Town Service (Phoenix Transport) will operate as close to normal a service.
  • The number 72  will not be operating -  Ruthin and rural surrounds including Bontuchel, Cyffylliog, Clocaenog, Clwaddnewydd, Derwen, Melin Y Wig and Betws Gwerfil Goch (Phoenix Transport)
  • The number 77  Ruthin – Llanelidan – Ruthin (Phoenix Transport) is also not operating today,
  • The number 55 Ruthin – Corwen – Llangollen – Wrexham (Llew Jones Coaches) is not operating today.
  • The T3 will stick to main road only and travel via the A5 between Llangollen and Wrexham due to the condition of the road near Trevor and the B4401 at Cynwyd.
  • Currently no services are being run by Arriva buses Wales from Wrexham into Denbighshire.

We expect all other services to run, but this is subject to change due to the challenging driving conditions.

Schools: All schools to the south of the A55 remain closed today due to the treacherous conditions, as are some other schools around the Rhyl and Prestatyn areas due to staff being unable to get into work.  This position will be updated later and information cascaded via schools and our website and social media accounts.  Information on school transport will also be shared when it becomes available.

Recycling and refuse collections:

  • North collections (Rhyl zone) are working OK today so far.
  • South collections (Denbigh zone) we are unable to make any collections at present due to condition of the roads and pavements. That is likely to remain the case for the day. We will catch up as soon as possible  so we are asking people to leave their bins out until we get to them (but this might be several days later than usual collection day as we also need to catch up on Fridays south rounds).

The Council will continue to provide information to the public and will assist in sharing the messages from the emergency services around the need to travel and disruption to roads etc.

We hope you have found this update useful.

A further update will be issued later today.
