One of Denbighshire’s secondary schools has reached a special milestone in its history and arrangements are being made to celebrate in style.
Ysgol Glan Clwyd in St Asaph was the first Welsh medium secondary school in Wales and it is celebrating its 60th birthday this year. The school originally opened on the site of Ysgol Dewi Sant in Rhyl in 1956 but moved to its current location in St Asaph in 1969.
There are currently around 1,000 pupils at the school and attracts pupils from a wide area, including the coast and parts of the vale of Clwyd, areas as far west as Hiraethog and towards Holywell in the east.
A number of high profile and prominent ex-pupils include signer and personality Caryl Parry Jones, chef Bryn Williams, singer and performer mark Evans, golfer Becky Brewerton and the actress Tara Bethan, to name but a few. The school has a strong tradition in performing and the arts.
To celebrate the occasion, a number of past and present pupils will take part in a Cabaret evening on Friday, 31st of March at 7.30pm. The evening’s compere will be actor Iwan Charles, originally from Llanrhaeadr near Denbigh and a former pupil. There will be a bar on the evening. Tickets will be £15.
Headteacher Bethan Cartwright said: “This event is a great opportunity for us to look back at the school’s history, a chance to celebrate the school’s musical talent and to look forward to the future.
“This is more than a 60th birthday celebration, as it commemorates 60 years of Welsh medium secondary education in Wales. , however at the Cabaret there will be very much an emphasis on celebrating the school’s success and there will be a feast of talent awaiting you.
“It has been an exciting period at the school as the new building was being built on site, to meet a growing demand for places. Work is already underway on redeveloping the older parts of the building and it’s expected that the new facilities will be open later this year.
To book tickets for the show (which will be held in the Welsh language), please phone the school on 01745 582 611 or e-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org
