Council welcomes new affordable family homes

Councillors from both Denbighshire County Council and Rhyl Town Council have welcomed a development of affordable homes in Rhyl which give local families the chance to get their first foot on the property ladder and own a home of their own.

Council representatives visited the Gronant St development currently nearing completion in Rhyl this week (March 8) which includes 12 homes for sale under the Welsh Government’s Home Buy initiative.

Under the scheme, a three-bed family home is available to buy with a mortgage of £58,500 while the two-bed homes start at £52,500. There is no addition rent to pay and the only other charges are legal fees for buyers and a £20 per month service charge covering the management of a secure carparking area for the homes.

The homes have been developed by the Pennaf Housing Group, which includes Clwyd Alyn Housing Association, in partnership with Denbighshire County Council and the Welsh Government.

Councillor Barbara Smith, Cabinet Lead Member for Housing, said: “These are exciting times for Rhyl and it’s excellent to see the transformation of housing in the area as an integral part of the regeneration of the town.

“The new homes are wonderful. They are a superb example of how partnership working is helping to provide a wide range of affordable housing options for local people in the area.”

The new-build houses are part of a development of 20 homes under construction by award-winning contractors Galliford Try Partnerships with 12 of the properties currently available to purchase under the Homebuy scheme.

Welcoming councillors to view the Gronant Street show home, Dr Sarah Horrocks, Chair of Clwyd Alyn said: “Providing people with a local connection to Rhyl with the opportunity to own their own home, overlooking the lovely new Gerddi Heulwen greenspace is part of our commitment empowering local people and helping to build a vibrant sustainable community in the area.”

Local town and county councillor and Deputy Mayor of Rhyl, Cllr Alan James praised the standard of the new homes and spoke of the positive impact regeneration work is already having in the area.

“There is a real buzz about all the positive development work that is now coming to fruition. Having great new homes alongside the new employment and leisure opportunities is making Rhyl a real focus for future investment and growth.”

While reservations have already been taken on over half of the new family homes, the last few are still available to buy. Anyone interested can arrange to view the show home or find out more by calling the Clwyd Alyn Customer Contact Centre on 0800 1835757.
