FIS training: Paediatric First Aid 12 hour course

The Paediatric First Aid 12 hour course provides a Paediatric First Aid qualification to comply with the Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW) National Minimum Standards (NMS).

Under the CIW NMS, 1 member of staff for every 10 children at a childcare setting must have this Paediatric First Aid qualification. For example; a setting registered for 70 children, will need at least 7 members of staff to have the qualification.

This course covers a range of subjects, including:

  • Role of the Paediatric First Aider
  • Recognising and managing seizure
  • Recognising and managing diabetic emergencies
  • Recognising and managing choking
  • Recognising and managing asthma
  • Dealing and managing an unconscious casualty
  • Performing resuscitation (CPR including the safe use of an AED)
  • Recognising signs of meningitis
  • Managing and treating wounds, bleeding and shock
  • Recognising and managing febrile convulsions
  • Recognising and managing allergic reactions including anaphylaxis
  • Recognising and managing fractures
  • Recognising and managing head, neck and back injuries
  • Managing eye, ears and facial injuries

The qualification is assessed through practical demonstrations and completion of written questions.

Learners must attend and complete all sessions to gain the qualification.

The qualification is valid for three years.

The Paediatric First Aid 12 hour course takes place:

  • Saturday 13 and Saturday 20 of April 2024, 9:30am to 4:30pm at Llanfwrog Community Centre, Ruthin - Fully booked
  • Tuesday 4 and Wednesday 5 of June 2024, 9:30am to 4:30pm at The Oaktree Centre - fully booked
  • Saturday 21 and Saturday 28 of September 2024, 9:30am to 4:30pm at The Oaktree Centre - Fully booked
  • Tuesday 12 and Wednesday 13 of November 2024, 9:30am to 4:30pm at Ruthin Rugby Club
  • Tuesday 14 and Wednesday 15 of January 2025, 9:30am to 4:30pm at The Oaktree Centre

Who can attend?

This course is only for registered childcare providers in Denbighshire who are registered, or are registering, with the Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW) (external website).

The setting must also be registered with Dewis.Wales (external website)

How to get involved

Each person who wants to attend will need to complete the online booking request form.
