Frequently asked questions: Bridge road, prestatyn - 2-way traffic trial

Frequently asked questions: Bridge road, prestatyn - 2-way traffic trial

What is the purpose of the two‑way traffic trial on Bridge Road?

The trial aims to assess whether changing Bridge Road to two‑way traffic can improve traffic flow and reduce congestion on surrounding streets.

What will change during the trial?

To help alleviate congestion at the bottom of the High Street and for vehicles travelling into Prestatyn, Bridge Road will be made two-way during the trial. This means vehicles will be able to turn left into Bridge Road after travelling over the bridge, and down to the mini roundabout at the bottom of the High Street. However, traffic wanting to turn right from Ffordd Pendyffryn will not be permitted, and vehicles will continue to turn right into Penisardre Road from this direction.

When will the trial take place?

The trial will begin on Monday 13th April 2026. Advance notice will be given to businesses, residents and visitors.

How long will the trial last?

The trial is expected to run for a minimum of 3 months, allowing the Council to monitor traffic, driver behaviour, and any impact on surrounding roads.

Will Bridge Road be closed at any point?

No full road closure is expected during the trial. However, in preparation for the trial, Bridge Road will be closed temporarily on Saturday 11th  April – Sunday 12th April. A diversion will be in place for motorists and temporary traffic management signage will be used to safely guide drivers at all times.

Will access for residents and businesses be maintained?

Yes. Access for homes, businesses, delivery vehicles, and emergency services will remain open throughout the trial.

How will pedestrians be affected?

Pedestrian routes will remain open. There will be no changes to crossings or footways during the trial.

Why is this trial needed?

Following feedback received during a recent consultation, the Council is exploring a two-way system on Bridge Road to:

  • Improve traffic flow, in particular for vehicles travelling over the bridge towards the town centre and also at the bottom of the High Street
  • Reduce congestion on key connecting roads.
  • Enhance access for residents, shoppers, and visitors.

How will the Council measure whether the trial is successful?

Data will be collected on:

  • Traffic volumes
  • Journey times
  • Congestion levels
  • Pedestrian safety
  • Impact on nearby roads such as the High Street and adjoining junctions

Feedback from residents and local businesses will also form a key part of the assessment.

Will public feedback be considered?

Yes. Residents, businesses and visitors are strongly encouraged to share their experiences during the next consultation planned for June 2026. Further details will be shared in due course.

Will the trial result in permanent changes?

No immediate permanent decision will be made. The Council will analyse results and community feedback before considering any long‑term changes. If the trial is successful, the permanent Traffic Regulation Order will be applied, and the two-way system will remain.

Will public transport or school transport be affected?

No bus route will be affected by the trial.

How will I be kept updated?

Updates will be published through Denbighshire County Council’s website, social media channels, local press notices and on‑street signage in the affected area.

Will I be able to drive straight from Gas Works Lane / Home Bargains to Bridge Road?

Yes. Vehicles will be able to travel straight ahead from Gas Works Lane / Home Bargains to Bridge Road, allowing access toward the mini roundabout and Parc Prestatyn.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How much money has Prestatyn received from UK Government for this project?

Just over £3 million has been awarded to this project to improve Prestatyn High Street. However, this amount must cover all project costs and not just construction.

What has the funding been awarded for?

To deliver 250m² of public realm improvements on Prestatyn High Street.

Are there any designs yet?

No, not yet. We are gathering feedback from a range of stakeholders to help inform the design. Feedback received from our first consultation will also help the design team to complete this work.

I have heard you are just talking to small groups of people; how do I add my views?

Please refer to the section above for further information about the consultation.

Once designs for this project are ready, will there be further consultation on the proposals?

Responses received to our information gathering survey will help inform initial designs. We look forward to hearing people’s views. It is important for us that you continue to be involved throughout the project, so we will ask for more feedback on any further designs we develop.

How will you keep people informed?

Information about the project as it evolves will be available on the Council’s website as well as through the following means:

  • Information in the local media.
  • Updates on Denbighshire’s social media channels – please follow our Facebook (external website) and X (formerly Twitter) (external website) pages for regular updates.
  • Through our Pride of Place and Natural Environment: Rhyl, Prestatyn and Denbigh mailing list - to be added to the mailing list please register on our website.
  • Posters in key community locations to promote local consultation as we acknowledge not everyone is online.
  • Promotion through local partners' own communication networks.

Will I get to see what people have said?

This is not a statutory consultation process so there is no requirement for the Council to publish individual responses. However, the Council will produce reports on the findings of our consultations. These will be made publicly available when they are ready.

Will the planned works be carbon neutral or even carbon positive?

As we have not yet designed the project, we do not know what the carbon impact will be. However, in 2019, the Council declared a Climate Emergency and has set ambitious targets to be Carbon Zero by 2030, more information can be found on our website. The carbon impact will therefore be a key consideration when designing and delivering the project.

Are you looking to pedestrianise all or some of High Street?

Having listened to the feedback from consultations carried out so far, including with Elected Members, there are no proposals to pedestrianise all or some of High Street.

Will there be a loss of on-street parking on High Street?

Having listened to the feedback from consultations carried out so far, including with Elected Members, there are no proposals to lose any on-street parking on High Street.

Have the designs been finalised?

The designs have not been finalised. The project is still at a very early stage of development. This public event is the first opportunity to show what the current ideas are, allowing us to get the thoughts of the public. The feedback we receive will be reviewed and considered in the next stage of the design.

Will Bridge Road go back to 2-way and will the build-out at Tu Mundo / Penisadre Road be removed?

The designs have not been finalised. The project is still at a very early stage of development. Any proposal involving any form of change will need to be evidenced by updated data, to include modelling, traffic flows and analysis of road safety data.

Is the existing paving being improved?

Yes. The proposed public realm improvement scheme includes upgrading the existing paving, ensuring consistent paving types and patterns along the High Street.

The existing traffic layout does not work at the bottom of the High Street. Are you able to improve this as part of the scheme?

We have noted the concerns raised by the community around the current traffic at the bottom of the High Street. We are assessing to see if we can reduce the congestion as part of this scheme. Any changes will be supported by associated traffic modelling which will be informed by the recently completed trial traffic surveys and traffic counts.

Has redirecting the traffic flow through the High Street been considered in our proposals?

The direction of the traffic flow for the High Street was determined as part of the one-way system being introduced. We are not proposing to change the traffic movement of the full length of the High Street and the surrounding roads.

Will the annual car show, events and markets be possible in the High Street under your design?

The proposed layout at the bottom of the High Street particularly will create areas which can be used for outside dining and seating and can also be used for markets and High Street events. The area will be designed in a way that areas can be closed off / pedestrianised temporarily for events and markets if required.

Will delivery vehicles be able to park on the High Street?

The proposed improvements will provide formal loading and unloading parking areas along the High Street and the use of the green drainage areas and possible bollards will be used to discourage/prevent parking outside of these designated areas.
