Educational Psychology Service

Educational Psychology helps us and others to understand how children develop and learn as well as how they may think, feel and behave.

Educational Psychologists work with early years and school age children (aged 0-19) and offer support to schools and families.

Why would my child be referred to an Educational Psychologist?

Children and young people can be referred to the Educational Psychology Service for lots of different reasons. Prior to the involvement of an Educational Psychologist school will discuss any concerns regarding a child’s development, learning and or behaviour with parents.

Where schools do not fully understand a child’s needs or where there is concern regarding their rate of development or progress a request for the involvement of an Educational Psychologist may be considered providing appropriate consent has been ascertained.

Who do we work with?

The work of an Educational Psychologist includes:

  • individual assessment/consultation work with children and young people aged 0-19 years,
  • helping teachers plan intervention programmes;
  • working with groups of children and young people;
  • work with parents or carers and adults who care for and educate children and young people;
  • specialist training for teachers;
  • whole school/systemic work; and
  • research and evaluation.

How to access the service

All schools have access to an allocated educational psychologist (EP) who makes pre-arranged school visits. Parents can access the EP service through discussion with their child’s school/Special Educational Needs Coordinator.

All of our Educational Psychologists:

  • have a degree in Psychology which is recognised by the British Psychological Society (BPS)
  • have at least two years’ experience in working with children following their degree, most being qualified teachers
  • have a professional qualification in Educational Psychology either at a Masters or Doctorate level; and
  • are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
