UKSPF project: Buttermarket Culture, Heritage and Wellbeing Centre

Funded by UK Government logo

Project lead: Vale of Clwyd Mind

This project is now complete.

Project overview

The project involves developing a tourism and community Hub to support the regeneration of Denbigh. The project will bring third sector organisations together, create a social enterprise, ensure the sustainability of Denbigh Museum and create an attractive space for the local community and wider tourism to ensure that Denbigh becomes a destination point for visitors.

The project will bring back to life a building of significant importance to the heritage of Denbigh.

The Buttermarket is located on land bounded by Chapel Place and Crown Lane in the centre of Denbigh. The building has currently been empty since July 2018.

Project update

Final project summary December 2022 to March 2025

The Buttermarket redevelopment in Denbigh transformed a long-vacant heritage building into a vibrant, multi-use community hub, offering accessible spaces across four floors.

Facilities include:

  • community café
  • museum
  • counselling rooms
  • office spaces and hot-desking areas (supporting organisations such as Vale of Clwyd Mind and Menter Iaith)

Funded through a mix of local and national sources, the project enhances:

  • cultural, social, and economic wellbeing,
  • expanding mental health services,
  • promoting the Welsh language
  • creating opportunities for volunteering and employment.

Strategically aligned with national wellbeing and prosperity goals, the hub is expected to boost town centre regeneration, increase footfall, and serve as a sustainable model for community-led development.
