Learning disabilities

Services to people with learning disabilities are provided in partnership with Betsi Cadwaldr University Health Board with Denbighshire County Council taking lead responsibility.

A learning disability is:

  • when you find it difficult to understand new or complicated information or learn new skills
  • when you find it difficult to cope on your own, and
  • something that started before you were an adult, and had a lasting effect on your development.

The team is based at County Hall, Ruthin and includes social care and health staff. The team uses a person centred approach which is a way of supporting an individual to make choices and changes in their life.  It is a way of helping an individual to plan their future and organise any support they may need.

In line with the Social Service & Well-being Act learning disability services will also support or promote the use of 3rd Sector and voluntary organisations  for example MENCAP, LD Forum, self-advocacy - more information is available on DEWIS (external website).
