Ageing Well in Denbighshire Action Plan
The Ageing Well in Denbighshire (AWiD) Action Plan was developed by AWiD members with input from older people across the county.
Supported by Denbighshire County Council, it sets out how AWiD will work together to help people age well and make Denbighshire a more accessible, supportive and age-friendly place to live.
AWiD is committed to delivering the actions in this plan to improve the lives of older people and strengthen our communities.
Working together, members of the Ageing Well in Denbighshire network helped Denbighshire become a member of the World Health Organisation’s Global Network of Age-friendly Cities and Communities.

Summary of the AWiD Action Plan
The plan focuses on the eight themes (domains), identified by the World Health Organization, to help people age well.

Denbighshire has beautiful countryside, coastlines, towns and villages that offer many opportunities for people to enjoy the outdoors, visit places of interest, and stay active as they get older. We want everyone to be able to enjoy these places by making sure they are welcoming, accessible and age-friendly.
We will work with local organisations and communities to identify and remove barriers that may prevent people from accessing and enjoying Denbighshire’s outdoor spaces, buildings and facilities, helping people of all ages and backgrounds to take part in community life.

Denbighshire is a largely rural county. While many people live along the north coast, towns, villages and communities inland are spread across a wide area. This can make travelling around the county more difficult, especially for those who rely on public or community transport.
We will work with local organisations and communities to understand the challenges people face and improve access to safe, reliable and affordable transport, helping everyone stay connected to services, activities and opportunities.

Having a safe and suitable home is essential for ageing well. Denbighshire has an increasing older population, and more people will need housing that meets their needs in the future. At the same time, housing has become less affordable, with fewer opportunities for home ownership and greater reliance on private renting.
We will work with local organisations and communities to understand the housing challenges people face and help remove barriers so that older people can access and remain in safe, secure and suitable accommodation that supports their independence and wellbeing.

We are proud of the wide range of activities available across Denbighshire, helping people of all ages stay active, connected and involved in their communities. These include groups and activities specifically for older people, such as older people’s forums and activities held in supported housing schemes.
We will continue to work with community groups, local organisations and the Health Board to reduce loneliness and social isolation. This includes promoting local activities and funding opportunities, encouraging people to take part in wellbeing initiatives, and celebrating the valuable contribution older people make to our communities.

We want to work in collaboration with organisations and communities to understand and tackle factors which lead to loneliness and promote opportunities for older people to engage with their communities.

Denbighshire’s towns, villages and communities are spread across a wide area. Because of this, it is important that people can easily access information, stay connected with others, and communicate in ways that work for them. Good communication and access to information help people remain independent, involved in their communities, and able to age well.
We will work with local organisations and communities to identify and remove barriers to communication and information sharing. By improving access to information and support, we can help people stay connected, take part in community life, and feel included, regardless of their age or circumstances.
