Ageing Well In Denbighshire Network

The Ageing Well in Denbighshire (AWID) group, is a long standing multi-agency network representing organisations and individuals from all sectors. The network meets quarterly with a shared aim of improving the experience of older people in Denbighshire, and taking an inter-generational and collaborative approach. Members include both older individuals and representatives of both the statutory and voluntary sector.

We have an Ageing Well in Denbighshire Action Plan 2024 to 2027, which is closely aligned with our County Council’s Corporate Plan, which also serves as our Wellbeing Plan and Equality Plan. One of the key themes of our Corporate Plan is to promote safety, resilience and well-being of people of all ages, by strengthening community networks. These networks help people to live safely, happily, independently, while ensuring support is available when needed, contributing to the vision of ‘A healthier and happier, caring Denbighshire’.

We have also aligned with the wellbeing outcomes within the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014 (external website) and the Wellbeing of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015 (external website), as well as Welsh Government’s Strategy for Older People in Wales (external website) and importantly, the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales Action Plan (external website), “taking action to protect older people’s rights, end ageism and age discrimination, stop the abuse of older people and enable everyone to age well.”

Our AWiD Action Plan 2024-2027 is also aligned with the World Health Organisation’s ‘Age Friendly Cities Framework’ (external website).

In June 2025, Denbighshire County was accepted into the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Network for Age-friendly Cities and Communities. By joining the Network, Ageing Well in Denbighshire (AWiD) committed to promoting the WHO Age-friendly principles, taking action to create more age-friendly local environments, and actively contributing to the global Network. The WHO Age-friendly Cities and Communities developed a framework based on eight domains for age friendly action:

  • Outdoor spaces and buildings
  • Transport and mobility
  • Housing
  • Social participation
  • Respect and social inclusion
  • Civic engagement and employment
  • Communication and information
  • Community support and health services

Each domain represents an important aspect of community life. While all eight domains are interconnected, they can be broadly grouped into three areas: the social environment, the physical environment and municipal services. These domains provide a framework for creating communities where people can age well and remain active, safe, and included.

Celebrating Age: Ageing Well in Denbighshire

We support and promote celebrations for older people in Denbighshire, including activities held each year on 1 October to mark the International Day of Older Persons. The event recognises the valuable contributions of older people, raises awareness of ageing-related issues and promotes greater awareness of the opportunities and challenges of ageing.
