The electoral register and the 'open' register

Electoral register

The electoral register (sometimes called the electoral roll) is a list of the names and addresses of everyone who is registered to vote in public elections.  It is used for law enforcement and by credit reference agencies, but only to check your name and address if you are applying for credit, and for some other purposes specified in law.

Viewing the electoral register

Members of the public are entitled to inspect the register of electors. The full electoral register can be viewed at County Hall, Wynnstay Road, Ruthin.

The purpose is to allow residents to check the accuracy of the register and primarily their entry in the register. Any information viewed cannot be used for any other purpose. Details from the full register must not be used for any commercial reason, and therefore it is expected that you will not need to look up more than a small number of addresses at any given time. The register of electors is not structured in a format to find a person by name it is structured for use by staff in individual polling stations.

Additionally, the law says you may view the register only under staff supervision. We are a small team, and therefore we limit any inspection of the register of electors to no more than 10 minutes per day. Email us at register@denbighshire.gov.uk if you would like to arrange a visit to view the current electoral register.

If you would like to view previous electoral registers dated back to 1832 please visit North East Wales Archives (external website).

Open Register

The open register (sometimes called the edited register) is an extract of the electoral register, but is not used for elections. It is available for general sale and can be bought by anyone and used for any purpose, including for marketing purposes.
