By-elections

By-elections are held when a vacancy becomes available between elections. This can happen at any level of government, from town and community councils and county council, to national government.

Vacancies arise when a member:

  • resigns
  • passes away
  • is declared bankrupt
  • is disqualified after not attending meetings for a continuous period of six months
