After you have signed-up and paid for the garden waste service, if there is no green wheelie-bin at your property already, you will need to report a missing container.

You can renew your subscription up to 12 weeks before your subscription ends. If you're not sure when your subscription ends, you can use the renewal form to find out when you can renew.

Upgrading your subscription

If you have signed up for one 140L green wheelie bin or three dumpy sacks collections, you can upgrade your subscription to two 140L green wheelie bins or six dumpy sacks collections for £15. Upgrading will not extend your subscription - this will end 12 months from the date of your first collection on your original 1 wheelie bin or 3 sacks subscription.

To upgrade your garden waste subscription, you will need to:

  1. pay for the delivery of a second 140L green wheelie bin or additional three dumpy sacks  
  2. pay for the collection service to empty the additional bin/sacks

What happens after I have arranged collections?

We will arrange to collect your garden waste for 12 months from the date of your first collection. If your garden waste subscription is the first subscription at your address, we will send you the following within 10 working days:

  • unique identification label for your green bin(s) or a tag for green dumpy sacks
  • a calendar showing your collection days
  • any additional containers (there is a charge for waste containers)

How much does it cost?

The cost for our garden waste collection service depends on the amount of containers you use and how you subscribe - it's cheaper if you subscribe online.

The type of container (wheelie bin or dumpy sacks) you use, depends on what you currently use on the x2 service.

*This option is only available to customers who already have the 240/360 litre wheelie bin - we will not be distributing anymore 240/360 litre wheelie bins. Any breakages will be replaced with 2 X 140 litre wheelie bins.

The Council introduced a separate charge for the garden waste collection service in 2015 in response to increasing budget pressures. The charge was initially set at a level to provide an annual saving of £400k.

Continuous pressure on Council budgets means further savings are necessary to balance the annual cost of the collection service (which now far exceeds £400,000) with demand. Whilst this is something we want to avoid, the Council considered that an increase in cost, sufficient to make the garden waste collection service self-sustaining, would have less impact on the community than other savings options presented.

The law (Controlled Waste Regulations 2012) gives Councils the discretion to make a reasonable charge for the collection of household garden waste. Charges can be set to recover the full cost of the collection service, but Councils cannot charge for the cost of recycling/composting of the garden waste.

No, there are no concessions offered. The same charges apply to all residents.

Yes, but the Council will send you reminders of the need to renew when your subscription enters its last 12 weeks. Alternatively, if you opt to pay using the annual direct debit option then your subscription will remain in place until you decide to cancel it.

No, subscriptions to the service are for a full 12 months.

Yes, when you subscribe to the service you can choose whether to have a single bin or two bins (or three or six dumpy sacks).

No, however, residents can transfer the remaining balance of their subscription to another address, either their own or that of a friend or relation, in Denbighshire.

Not returning your old wheelie bin

When ordering a replacement wheelie bin due to a bin being damaged beyond repair, or up/down sizing, the old wheelie bin must be returned when we deliver the new bin. If the old bin is not available when delivering the new one, there will be a further charge of £10 to be paid before the new bin can be delivered. There will be no charge if the bin is missing because our collection crew damaged it and were unable to return it to the kerbside.

Garden waste that can be collected

The following garden waste goes in your green wheelie bin or green dumpy sack:

  • grass cuttings
  • garden prunings
  • branches and twigs
  • leaves
  • bark
  • flowers
  • bark wood and shavings
  • plants

We will not empty green dumpy bags or green bins which contain; soil, general household rubbish, food products or any hay/shavings, wood or paper which are contaminated by animals.

Some garden waste can be shredded and returned to the soil as a mulch or composted at home either on a traditional compost heap or a home composter.

Customers on weekly pink and clear sack collections

Unfortunately, the garden waste collection service is unavailable to customers on weekly pink and clear sack collections. If you are on these collections, please do not sign up for the garden waste collections. We will be reviewing this and will let you know if this changes.

No. We will not empty any black bin or refuse sack that contains garden waste. Garden waste must be placed in either the green wheelie bin or green dumpy sack. If garden waste is found in any other container, it will result in a formal notice being served and possible further enforcement action being taken.

No. Councils are not obliged to provide householders free collection of their garden waste although they do have a duty to dispose of household waste free of charge. The law gives Councils the discretion to make a reasonable charge for the collection of household garden waste in the same way that charges can be made for bulky waste collection.

Every subscribing household is issued with a unique barcode to attach to their bin or bins which links the bin to a particular address. In addition, each collection vehicle is equipped with a tablet that gives the collection team live information on which addresses have current subscriptions.

Yes, neighbours can share a subscription but please bear in mind that the bin must be set out at the address to which the service is registered.

Yes, if you have a green garden waste bin that you do not use you please tell us and we will remove it. You can do this online or by calling the Customer Service Centre on 01824 706000.

If you pay someone to look after your garden, the garden waste produced can be placed in your green bin for disposal. Any contractor who removes waste from your home MUST be a registered carrier of waste and they will charge you for the legitimate disposal of garden waste.

The Council will always notify you of any permanent change to your garden waste collection day. Temporary changes, such as those sometimes made over Christmas or due to adverse weather, will be appear on the Council website and through Council social media channels. Please note that the time of all collections can change with no notice due to roadworks or adverse weather conditions so the Council always recommends that waste is set out by 7:00am on the day of collection.

When you receive a new barcode sticker, it should be affixed to the rear of the bin, ideally around 300mm (12") below the handles. To ensure good adhesion, make sure the surface of the bin is clean and dry before affixing the sticker.
